Pakistan vs Ireland Warm-Up Match Abandoned Due to Heavy Rain in Colombo

Colombo: Pakistan and Ireland were denied valuable match practice ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after their warm-up fixture was abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to continuous rain at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

Persistent showers throughout the day made the outfield unplayable, forcing match officials to call off the game without even conducting the toss. The decision was taken to avoid player injuries and protect pitch conditions.

Big Blow to Pakistan’s Preparation

This was Pakistan’s only scheduled warm-up match before the tournament, making the washout a major setback for the Men in Green. Pakistan recently defeated Australia 3-0 in a home T20I series and were hoping to carry that momentum into the World Cup.

Ireland, too, came into the match in good form after a 2-0 T20I series win against the UAE. Both teams will now enter the tournament without a final practice game.

Rain Threat Looms Over Pakistan’s Opening Match

According to weather updates, rain is also expected in Colombo on February 7, when Pakistan are scheduled to play their first group match against the Netherlands. Reports suggest a 20–40% chance of rain during match hours, raising concerns over possible further disruptions.

Political Tension Adds to Pakistan’s Challenges

The washout comes amid reports of Pakistan government instructions regarding not playing against India in the tournament. This situation has added uncertainty and pressure on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the World Cup begins.
