India kicked off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 29-run victory over the United States of America at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Despite being heavy favourites, Team India were pushed hard by a spirited USA side before captain Suryakumar Yadav’s masterclass turned the game in India’s favour.
Suryakumar Yadav Rescues India After Top-Order Collapse
India’s innings got off to a disastrous start as they lost early wickets in the powerplay. Openers failed to capitalize, and India were reduced to 77/6, putting them under serious pressure.
At that crucial moment, skipper Suryakumar Yadav played a sensational unbeaten knock of 84 runs off 49 balls, showcasing composure, innovation, and leadership. His late assault helped India recover to a respectable total of 161/9 in 20 overs.
USA bowler Shadley van Schalkwyk impressed with a four-wicket haul, troubling India’s batting lineup and keeping the underdogs firmly in the contest.
Indian Bowlers Dominate Early in USA Chase
Chasing 162, the USA suffered early blows as Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh struck inside the powerplay. The USA were reduced to 13/3, denting their chase early.
However, Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37) and Milind Kumar (34) stitched together a fighting partnership, giving USA hope of pulling off a historic upset.
